Project |02 Khirki Mosque
Site: Khirki Mosque, New Delhi, India
Area: 3090 sqm
Type: Group project (Done in a group of four)
My role: Planning and conceptualization of spaces
The symmetrically admirable mosque is considered as 'one of the finest architectural compositions of the Sultanate History'.
It is a two story building. There used to be a tehkhana (cellar) on the ground floor, probably built to escape the summer heat and the floor above was for prayers. The mosque is roofed over with four openings to let in light and has 89 domes. This feature and the fact that it is the only mosque that is fully roofed over, gives it, its unique Architectural value.
The idea of this project was to accommodate four activities inside the space, namely - exhibition area, crafts area, a creche and a library. The basic strategy behind designing the space was to enhance the existing Architecture and not disturb the essence of the space.
